New

A new book has not been read or previously owned. Depending on how it has been stored, it may occasionally have a minor storage mark or slight shelf wear, which should be mentioned in the individual listing.

Like New

A book described as like new has been previously owned but shows very little evidence of use. The pages should be clean, the binding secure and the cover in excellent condition.

Very Good

A very good book has been read but remains clean, complete and well cared for. It may have light signs of handling, such as small cover marks, gentle edge wear or a lightly creased spine.

Good

A book in good condition remains perfectly suitable for reading but will show clearer signs of previous use. This might include cover wear, spine creasing, lightly tanned pages or a previous owner’s name inside.

Acceptable

An acceptable book has noticeable wear but remains complete and readable. It may have heavier creasing, marks, page tanning or wear to the cover and spine. Any significant faults should be clearly stated in the listing.

Vintage

Age is part of the character of a vintage book. Older books may have page tanning, foxing, an aged scent, inscriptions or wear to their covers and dust jackets. These features do not necessarily make the book undesirable, but they should be described honestly so you know what to expect.

What Should You Check Before Buying a Second-Hand Book?
